Column Spacing (Grid)

Column Spacing describes the distance between a building’s load bearing columns and the distribution of the columns within a building more generally.  This distance and the distribution of the columns has a major impact of the efficient use of the space by the occupant. More numerous columns and especially those located close to but not in the line of the facade reduce flexibility in laying out partitions and work spaces in offices and racking systems goods handling areas in warehouses. For modern warehouses the minimum commonly recognized standard is 12 meters by 18 meters. For office buildings, the mimimum standard for Class A is 8 meters by 8 meters.
